National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi

The Renaissance Project will participate in efforts to create Piazza San Francesco — a gathering place for all.

A dream of the residents and merchants of North Beach and San Francisco and of the Archdiocese of San Francisco is to convert the portion of the street directly in front of the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi — Vallejo Street from Columbus to Grant — into a gathering place for all — San Franciscans, visitors, and pilgrims.

Fashioned after the piazzas of Umbria in Italy, this plaza would feature Benny Bufano's large statue of Saint Francis, patron saint of the National Shrine and of the City of San Francisco, welcoming all to this special environment. The piazza would give an opportunity for local residents, pilgrims to the National Shrine, and tourists to rest, take refreshment, and enjoy the ambience of Northern California, San Francisco, North Beach, and the National Shrine.
